Derby Comment: Five Ways Inter Can Beat Milan

1) Be Confident, Not Complacent

Inter have won the last three derbies in Serie A, the last two by a combined score of 6-0 in 2009-10.  In those matches they were firing on all cylinders, but the truth is that neither the Massimo Moratti's men nor their city rivals have done so this season. The Nerazzurri should be confident of a good result, just as Juventus were a couple weeks back against Milan, but thinking it will be an easy task based on last season's meetings would be a mistake. Show their rivals they are confident, but not complacent.

2) Exploit Milan On The Counter

It's not the best kept secret in the world that Milan can often line up in a slightly unbalanced fashion, nor are they a particularly speedy team. Both Real Madrid and Juventus have taken advantage of this in recent weeks and with an attack consisting of Diego Milito and Samuel Eto'o, there is no reason that Inter can't as well. The likes of Wesley Sneijder and Dejan Stankovic should be looking to get the ball forward immediately to the strikers once it's recovered hoping to catch the Rossoneri out of position.

3) Let Lucio Loose On Ibrahimovic

In a season where several Inter players have struggled, along with Samuel Eto'o, Lucio has arguably been one who has lived up to expectations. The Brazilian center-back has been a rock at the back and tamed Zlatan last season in the matches against Barcelona. Without Pato, the Swede (with six goals this season) will be the main scoring threat and Lucio must keep him in check. It is also of note to try and avoid Cordoba - Ibra confrontations - the height and strength of the Milan target man may cause problems against the veteran Colombian defender.

4) Give Sneijder Double Duty

Ballon d'Or candidate Wesley Sneijder is expected to return to the line-up as a trequartista, but also has a role on the defensive end to play, especially if Andrea Pirlo is on the field. Whichever player serves as Milan's metronome, the Dutchman should be marking him when Inter do not have the ball. This is a tactic that will force the Rossoneri to look for other options and make mistakes.

5) Put Your Pride On The Line
Often before big matches, you will hear a number of the participants claim that 'it is just another game' or something remarkable similar. Right? Wrong! This is possibly the most highly anticipated city derby in the world. Even at this early stage of the season, a loss for Inter would put them six points adrift and a win could put them back into first place. Inter have dominated Serie A since Calciopoli and their champions status is on the line - effort and concentration need to be at their peak. The Nerazzurri need to wear their heart on their sleeve in this encounter.
